October 03, 2024 by SME Communications Did you know there’s a day dedicated to showcasing modern manufacturing to the public, students, and parents? National Manufacturing (MFG) Day not only aims to inspire interest in manufacturing but also to highlight that these careers are high-tech and innovative. With around 622,000 U.S. manufacturing positions currently unfilled, and that number expected to grow to 2.5 million by 2030, the need for skilled talent has never been greater. At the SME Education Foundation, our mission to inspire, prepare, and support the next generation of manufacturing talent aligns perfectly with the goals of MFG Day. This year, we’re celebrating with a month-long event featuring our SME PRIME schools participating in our Digital Bright Minds Student Summit from October 1-25. A Month-Long Celebration of Manufacturing Innovation Throughout October, the Digital Bright Minds Student Summit takes SME PRIME students on an immersive journey through the world of manufacturing and engineering. This Digital Student Competition is designed to inspire the next generation of manufacturing and engineering talent by offering engaging learning opportunities and showcasing the possibilities within these fields. Over 1,000 students from 25 SME PRIME schools across 11 states will participate in gamified learning, hands-on activities, a virtual factory tour with FANUC, among other exciting experiences. SME PRIME students will participate in four – one-hour online modules, at their own pace, competing in games and earning points along the way. The top three teams with the highest points at the end of the month will win prizes, with $5,000 awarded for first place, $3,500 for second, and $1,500 for third. By exploring advanced manufacturing technologies and connecting classroom learning to real-world applications, this month-long competition is intended to spark interest of the future workforce. Why Manufacturing Day Matters MFG Day is more than just a celebration; it's a call to action. As we face a growing skills gap in manufacturing, it is crucial to inspire young people to ensure the industry continues to thrive with talented and passionate individuals. Through events like the Digital Bright Minds Student Summit, we are committed to equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration they need to thrive in the world of manufacturing.
