EmpowerHer: Navigating Pathways in Engineering

On May 16, 2024, SME Membership hosted, “EmpowerHer,” a collaborative, virtual event focused on inspiring middle and high school students. Hosted by SME and AWT,  the event was designed to encourage and empower young people, especially young women, to pursue careers in the field of engineering. Moderated by Toni Neary, director of community engagement and workforce innovation at SME, the event featured a panel of women in the field of engineering.

  • Dr. Allison Ledford, an assistant research professor at Auburn University
  • Lily Brightman, a graduating senior from Beaumont School
  • Ava Raugust, a high school senior from San Diego

The online event serves as an inspiration for budding engineers, offering invaluable insights and guidance. Here are the key takeaways from the discussion:

Understanding Engineering

The panelists defined engineering as a discipline centered on problem-solving, innovation, and collaboration.

Dr. Allison Ledford emphasized its application in solving both tangible and abstract problems using mathematics and science. Lily Brightman stated the field’s collaborative nature in creating solutions and fostering innovation.

Engineering in Daily Life

The discussion underscored the ubiquity of engineering in our daily routines, from the construction of buildings to the design of electronic devices like smartphones.

Raugust and Ledford elaborated on this point, citing examples such as optimizing driving routes and streamlining morning routines, highlighting the diverse applications of engineering principles in everyday scenarios.

Diversity in Engineering

All of the speakers highlighted the importance of communication and coordination among different stakeholders in engineering projects.

Raugust shared insights from her construction internship, emphasizing the need for constant interaction among engineers, architects, clients, and construction teams.

Brightman offered a glimpse into the iterative process of bringing ideas to fruition in robotics, underscoring the importance of collaboration with sponsors for manufacturing.

Advice for Aspiring Engineers

The panelists offered valuable advice for individuals considering a career in engineering.

Raugust advocated for an initiative-taking approach, urging aspiring engineers to seize every opportunity and remain open to exploration. Brightman encouraged embracing new experiences and learning from them.

Ledford addressed systemic barriers and biases, urging individuals to seek out opportunities for growth within the engineering community.

Each panelist encouraged the audience to leverage platforms like LinkedIn to connect with mentors and actively engage with the engineering community. While emphasizing practical guidance, the event also fostered a sense of empowerment and resilience in aspiring engineers, inspiring them to pursue their passions with determination.
