Forging an 80-Year Legacy of Innovation and Leadership in Manufacturing

In January 2025, Oakland-Macomb Chapter 69 begins a journey under the leadership of Adonis Agapiou as the incoming chair, continuing a proud family legacy. Adonis is the son of John Agapiou, a long-time Chapter 69 member and respected leader.

Chapter 69 has achieved platinum status for the sixth consecutive year, SME’s highest recognition for a chapter. As one of seven chapters worldwide to maintain this honor for five or more years, it’s a testament to their leadership and dedication to advancing manufacturing.

With over 350 members, Chapter 69 is the largest SME chapter globally. Founded in 1945, it will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2025, marking a significant milestone in its longstanding commitment to the industry.

Passing the Torch

John Agapiou expressed his enthusiasm and pride as his son, Adonis, steps into the role of Chapter 69 chair. “I’m very excited for Adonis to take on this role! His energy, drive, and dedication should serve our chapter well. I truly hope that he can engage with younger engineers and professionals, sharing with them the benefits of an SME membership. It is our hope that the next generation of professionals will continue promoting manufacturing and use their knowledge and skills to find creative solutions to complex ideas. As chair of Chapter 69, Adonis will grow as an engineer and hopefully build strong relationships within the manufacturing community.”

Reflecting on the advice he shared with his son; John emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration. “We have some great role models within our chapter. I made sure he understands how important it is to communicate with our members and to feel comfortable asking questions or seeking suggestions. Our members have a wealth of experience, and Adonis will do well to tap into this valuable resource.”

A Legacy of Leadership and Connection

John Agapiou has been actively involved with Chapter 69 since moving to Michigan in 1985, serving in various roles on both the chapter board and the NAMRI Board. His involvement with SME has been instrumental to his career, offering opportunities to connect with industry leaders, national laboratories, and academia. Through SME, John has engaged with mentors, explored new ideas, and gained valuable knowledge that advanced his work across the manufacturing industry.  Above all, he has built lifelong friendships with a diverse and exceptional group of professionals.

As a former Chapter Chair-Elect, John reflected on his proudest moments and the impact SME has had on his career.

“It’s been such an honor to interact with so many people from various sectors, including industry, National Labs, and education, but especially with our members! Our monthly events have been incredible, and I’m so proud of our Board Members for their commitment to excellence in organizing these events over the years. From industrial tours to celebrating Manufacturing Day with local youth, our chapter members have worked tirelessly to coordinate these amazing experiences. I am very thankful for their support, time, and talent.”

John also shared how being involved with SME and Chapter 69 has shaped his career and personal growth. “SME and its chapters have helped me realize my dreams by providing knowledge that benefits me both personally and professionally. I’ve been an SME member since 1981 when I was a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My professor, Dr. Marvin Devries, held several positions within SME and helped me understand the benefits of membership.”

Oakland-Macomb Chapter 69 stands as a pillar in the manufacturing community, with a rich history of leadership and achievement. From its six consecutive years of Platinum status to its commitment to innovation through initiatives like the SME+ App pilot program, the chapter has continually advanced the manufacturing industry in Southeast Michigan. As it approaches its 80th anniversary, the leadership transition to Adonis Agapiou marks the next exciting chapter in its legacy. Supported by a strong foundation and the dedication of its members, Chapter 69 is poised to inspire and shape the future of manufacturing for generations to come.
