Below we’ll share some of the most discussed topics: Groundbreaking Advancements Recently, research has produced a significant breakthrough in power bed fusion. A new model recently introduced a dual-mode laser capable of melting large areas swiftly using a “ring mode” while still offering a “spot mode” for precision work. This innovation enhances the efficiency of the AM process by seamlessly switching between the two modes to address the entire manufactured part. The transformative potential of improved materials and the ability to combine them was another topic of discussion. This innovation opens avenues for groundbreaking designs and applications, potentially revolutionizing manufacturing landscapes. Another topic was the dynamic nature of the automotive industry, where AM enables rapid adaptations to meet evolving demands. Additionally, AM facilitates the creation of seamless, intricate parts critical for safety, particularly in waterproofing electric vehicles. Revolutionizing Traditional Processes Participants reviewed the potential of AM as an enabler for the automotive industry’s next generation. Its ability to offer fast and efficient solutions, such as production of lightweight materials, remains largely untapped. Discussion centered on the performance enhancements achievable through AM, particularly in combining alloys for superior product attributes, such as increased thermal performance, durability, and tensile strength. Participants also expressed the excitement about the implications of AM in the consumer goods market by manufacturing thousands of high value materials which when added could increase the lifespan of products. The value of prototyping in AM was reviewed, suggesting a phased approach starting with polymer prototypes before moving to designated materials, ensuring cost efficiency and an optimal fit and function. Addressing Challenges Attendees discussed the importance of embracing experimentation and learning in overcoming challenges in AM. One participant even shared that they embrace the idea of “fail early, fail often.” His experience has shown that even though significant time has been invested into the design phase, that does not guarantee the AM part will fit necessary specifications. Across the industry, manufacturers are facing parts shortages, and attendees discussed how the innovative and creative nature of AM leads to numerous opportunities for relieving the shortage issue. Others highlighted the critical need for certification and adherence to standards in producing AM parts, stressing the industry’s ongoing efforts to establish robust validation processes. Fostering Collaboration Participants advocated for standardization acceptance criteria across suppliers to ensure uniform quality standards. The value of the collaborative spirit within the AM community and the belief that fostering this culture of knowledge-sharing can drive innovation and problem-solving in manufacturing.
