March 27, 2024 by SME Communications Matthew Clegg’s unwavering dedication to SME has helped to shape a remarkable career and brought him a sense of fulfillment like no other. His journey into the world of manufacturing and engineering began as a young music major with dreams of becoming a classical musician. However, life took an unexpected turn during the Great Recession, leading him to reevaluate his path. Inspired by a friend's captivating tales of engineering projects, Matthew realized he could apply his passion for understanding intricate systems to a new domain. After completing his music degree, he went back to school as a post-baccalaureate student to study engineering. His decision to obtain an engineering degree at Central Washington University (CWU) was the starting point of an extraordinary transformation. It was during this time that Matthew's path intersected with SME, thanks to the student chapter, SME Chapter S368. Through the guidance of faculty advisor Professor Charles Pringle, Matthew gained access to invaluable experiences—factory tours and industry connections—that broadened his horizons and helped him see the immense potential of his future in manufacturing. "SME served as a springboard for professional networking, which proved vital to my first several years in industry as an 'Emerging Professional.' There is power in community," Matthew remarks, reflecting on the pivotal role SME played during his college years. Early involvement in SME provided him with the chance to shake hands with other members who became pivotal figures in his career journey. For Matthew, renewing his SME membership annually is not just a habit; it's an affirmation of the continuous support and inspiration the organization provides. "SME has been a consistent source of positivity, professional community, and inspiration throughout my college and professional careers," he explains. Engaging with fellow manufacturing engineers and contributing to the growth of the next generation has been deeply fulfilling for Matthew. As a manufacturing engineer, Matthew's passion lies in owning and investing not only in the products he helps create but also in the processes that bring them to life. He thrives on the challenge of perfecting the “how” of designs in the real world and cares deeply about the creation of the design over their complete lifecycle. Over the course of his career, SME has been instrumental in nurturing this passion by providing a rich network of mentors and mentees. Matthew believes that the mentorship dynamic within SME is not only circular but bi-directional, offering opportunities to learn from each other and the industry at large. "Mentorship is a beautiful ritual we have in the manufacturing industry. It sets SME apart as a professional organization," he proudly shares. Now, over a decade into his career, Matthew is now at the forefront of shaping the future of manufacturing engineering by sitting on the SME Member Council, the member-led body that assists with recognizing and meeting the needs of Membership. Together with fellow council members, he dreams and creates the foundations of learning and community for future professionals. Looking ahead, Matthew is excited to engage with SME at an even higher level and continue helping individuals discover the same passion for the industry that has driven him. When asked about the most beneficial resource SME offers, Matthew's answer is simple: community. "It's fun to help each other learn and succeed!" he exclaims. The vibrant community of SME members fosters a culture of collaboration, support, and camaraderie, which is vital for professional growth and personal satisfaction. Matthew’s journey from a music major to a passionate manufacturing engineer with SME as his guiding force is a testament to the transformative power of membership. For those seeking to be part of a dynamic community that fosters personal growth, professional success, and meaningful connections, joining SME is the first step towards unlocking your full potential in the world of manufacturing and engineering.
