Steve MarthRecently, I reflected on how SME opened doors in my career. When I graduated from college, I stepped into my first job as a manufacturing engineer at a small tube-bending shop. The reality was challenging, we were missing deadlines and drowning in excess inventory. I quickly realized there had to be a better way to run production. That’s when my manager handed me a book from SME on lean manufacturing, sparking a journey that would profoundly shape my career. From the moment I started reading, I was hooked. Lean manufacturing became my guiding principle, teaching me to eliminate waste and maximize value in production processes. This was my first exposure to SME, and I soon became a member, gaining access to a wealth of information on lean principles and manufacturing processes.

Through SME, I not only learned about lean methodologies but also earned certifications in Lean and Manufacturing Engineering. These credentials were pivotal in landing a position with a fitness company in Seattle. During the interview process, I presented my Lean Certification Portfolio to my future manager, who was equally passionate about lean practices. He later told me that my Lean Portfolio set me apart from other candidates and helped me secure the job.

My journey with SME didn’t stop there. In 2015, I became the chair of the Seattle chapter, a volunteer leadership role that provided tremendous opportunities for personal growth. I was tasked with creating a personal development goal at work, and I decided to align my objectives with my responsibilities as chapter chair. We developed a strategic plan to host one event or tour per month, ultimately achieving Platinum Award status for our chapter. This experience taught me the value of goal-setting and strategic planning, skills that have served me well throughout my career.

There are countless examples of how SME has opened doors for me, from providing access to invaluable manufacturing knowledge to fostering connections with industry professionals. Today, SME continues to offer a wealth of information on emerging technologies, advanced automation, and additive manufacturing, helping me stay at the forefront of the industry. I challenge you to explore how SME can open doors for your career. Whether through certifications, networking opportunities, or volunteer leadership roles, the potential for growth is immense. Don’t hesitate to engage with the resources available and your local chapters.

I can confidently say that SME has been instrumental in my professional development. The knowledge, skills, and connections I’ve gained have transformed my career path and opened doors I never thought possible. I encourage you to embrace the opportunities that SME offers and take charge of your own career growth.
