November 08, 2024 As we look back on the Smartforce Student Summit, held during the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) this past September, we are thrilled to share the remarkable success of this year’s event. For the first time in 2024, the Smartforce Student Summit was coproduced by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, and SME. With an impressive attendance of 14,086—including K-12 and post-secondary students, teachers, administrators, and parent chaperones from a record-high 49 states plus Washington, D.C.—the summit was a vibrant showcase of opportunities in manufacturing and STEM careers. A Record-Breaking Event This year’s Smartforce Student Summit was 30% larger than ever before, spanning 30,000 square feet and featuring 70 exhibitors from leading manufacturing companies like FANUC America, Haas Automation, Mazak, Universal Robots and Siemens, alongside community organizations and educational institutions. The event served as a powerful platform for students to explore various career pathways in manufacturing, directly aligning with the goals of National STEM Day, which we celebrate today. One of the standout moments was the participation of nearly 400 Chicago Public School elementary students and their coaches in the FIRST Lego League season launch. These young innovators engaged in hands-on activities focused on submersibles and ocean research, showcasing how fun and impactful STEM education can be. Engaging Students in Manufacturing Careers The Summit played a crucial role in introducing students to the dynamic world of manufacturing, emphasizing that careers in this field are not only accessible but also rewarding. With BlueForge Alliance promoting initiatives to build submarines, and the unveiling of innovative technologies like a 3D-printed robot cell from Kawasaki Robotics, students were able to see firsthand the advancements shaping the future of manufacturing. Workshops and certifications, such as FANUC America’s first-ever Robot Certification Academy at the Smartforce Student Summit, provided educators with the tools to inspire their students further, ensuring that they leave with both knowledge and practical skills. SME partnered with Tallo, a top talent development platform that bridges the gap between emerging talent and exciting career and educational opportunities, at this year’s event. Through this partnership, students were able to explore manufacturing careers before, during, and after the Summit with a free Tallo account. Supporting STEM Education On STEM Day, it’s essential to reflect on the purpose of this dedicated day: to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Smartforce Student Summit directly supports this mission by offering students the opportunity to envision themselves in these careers. With programs that encourage exploration and hands-on learning, we are fostering the next generation of innovators and leaders. The impact of the summit extends beyond just the event itself; it is part of a larger movement to support STEM education and workforce development. This year, the Miles For Manufacturing 5K at IMTS raised a record $47,455 to fund CPS STEM initiatives and FIRST and VEX robotics teams, with additional matching grants amplifying this support. The success of the Smartforce Student Summit at IMTS 2024 demonstrates the importance of providing students with pathways into manufacturing careers. As we celebrate STEM Day, let us continue to inspire and empower young minds to explore the vast opportunities that await them in these fields. Together, we can shape the future of manufacturing and ensure a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
